Our Work

Ongoing Programs

Current projects

These programs continue to expand opportunity and resilience in Karki Gaun and nearby communities.

Goat farming in rural Nepal
Livelihood

Goat Farming Program

Helping vulnerable families create sustainable sources of income through livestock farming.

Families receive young goats and practical training in how to establish and maintain a sustainable breeding program. In return, they give their first-born kids back to the program so they can be passed to new families. In this way the program continues and grows.

Hilly villages such as Karki Gaun are well suited to goat keeping because of available grassland, forest and water. Goat farming offers a relatively straightforward path to income for individuals or groups and is especially valuable for women and young people, as well as for adults returning from work abroad.

Goals

  • Create jobs for young people, women and returnees
  • Reduce economic vulnerability through independent income
  • Enable families to invest in education and health
  • Build more sustainable meat production using local resources
Education

Adult Literacy Program (ALP)

Giving women the chance to learn to read and write — and much more.

Many women in the village never had the opportunity to go to school. Since 2018, adult women from the community meet every afternoon at the school and are taught by qualified teachers. They learn to read and write in Nepali and English, and receive instruction in mathematics, health, menstruation, water and sanitation, waste management, modern agriculture and animal husbandry.

The motto of the program is: “One mother equals a hundred teachers.” Women who can read and write are better able to support their children’s education and to manage daily life with greater confidence.

The curriculum was developed with education experts and a professor from Tribhuvan University. Occasional activities such as picnics provide important social and learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Goals

  • Give women in the community access to education
  • Reduce adult illiteracy
  • Provide skills that benefit women in everyday life
  • Enable women to support their children’s schooling
  • Strengthen women’s independence and confidence

Traditional knitting
Skills

Knitting Project

Creating extra income for women while preserving traditional craft.

During the dry winter period, when agricultural work is lighter, women produce intricate traditional knitwear — sweaters, gloves and other garments. Naya Paila Nepal helps find markets for the finished products through fair-trade channels.

This generates additional household income and keeps an important traditional skill alive in the community.

Goals

  • Generate a reliable source of income for women
  • Preserve traditional craftsmanship
Financial Inclusion

Retail Cooperative & Savings Project

Giving villagers — especially women — the chance to save and access small loans for the first time.

Many people in the community do not have bank accounts. Women in particular often lack access to formal financial services. Naya Paila Nepal established a community-owned savings fund with initial capital and training in financial management.

Participants contribute a small monthly amount to individual savings accounts. They can also take loans from the main fund at a normal interest rate. The fund is administered by the group itself with support from Adult Literacy Program teachers.

Goals

  • Enable women and families to save money
  • Build competence in financial management

Completed & Recent Projects

Work already delivered

From post-earthquake reconstruction to recent education support — practical results that strengthen families and the community.

School building
Education Infrastructure

School Reconstruction

After the 2015 earthquake, Naya Paila Nepal built two community schools using compressed stabilized earth bricks (CSEB). Later, with support from the Japanese government, a larger school building with eight classrooms was constructed to international standards. We also provide books and stationery to children who need them.

Brick making
Reconstruction

CSEB Brick Project

Nearly 95% of houses in Karki Gaun were destroyed in 2015. We established a small brick factory producing environmentally friendly, earthquake-resistant compressed stabilized earth bricks. Bricks were supplied at low cost or free to the most under-resourced families so they could rebuild their homes.

Water tank
Water & Sanitation

Water Project

The village water tank (capacity ~50,000 litres) was destroyed in the earthquake, affecting about 200 households. Naya Paila Nepal built a new 20,000-litre tank; the government then supported a second 50,000-litre tank. The community now has 70,000 litres of storage capacity and a water-meter system.

Scholarship
Education

Student Scholarship Support

We provide scholarships so that children from under-resourced families can continue their education. This includes past support for college-level study and ongoing help for students who would otherwise struggle to stay in school.

School uniforms
Education · 2024–2025

Winter School Uniform Support

In 2024 and 2025, Naya Paila Nepal provided winter school uniforms to students at the local community school. This ensures children from vulnerable families can attend class with dignity and stay warm during the cold season.

Housing

House Reconstruction Support

Naya Paila Nepal helped under-resourced families rebuild their homes after the earthquake. Families who lost everything received practical support so they could return to safe, adequate housing.

Community library
Education

Library & Learning Center

We established the first community library in the rural municipality. The aim is to build a reading culture, preserve Nepali traditions and values, and bring the community together around learning.
